The Society for Biotechnology, Japan (SBJ), as an academic society situated in Asia, is actively engaged in collaboration with societies of other Asian countries in the field of biotechnology.

Academic Agreements with Societies in Asia

  1. The Korean Society for Biotechnology and Bioengineering (KSBB)
    Since 1998, SBJ has agreement with KSBB for the promotion of collaboration. Every year each society invites five speakers from the counterpart society to its own annual meeting, or symposium through which each society exchanges the advanced scientific knowledge and acknowledges the activity range of each society. SBJ selects three delegates from among the awardees of the Society Award, the Saito Award, the Eda Award, the Terui Award, and the Technical Award.

    KSBB members can subscribe to the SBJ journals (Journal of Bioscience and Bioengineering and Seibutsu-kogaku Kaishi) at a reduced rate. Online-only option is also available for KSBB members to access the full text of the Journal of Bioscience and Bioengineering (JBB) back to Vol. 64 (1986) through ScienceDirect.
     
  2. Thai Society for Biotechnology (TSB)
    SBJ and TSB signed an MOU on May 23, 2023 to deepen exchanges between the two societies and their members through annual conferences. TSB members can get a user account to access the full text of JBB back to Vol. 64 (1986)  through ScienceDirect at a reduced rate.
     
  3. Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering Society of Taiwan (BEST)
    SBJ and BEST signed an MOU on June 24, 2017 to promote the interaction and active scientific collaboration between the two societies and their members.
     
  4. Philippine Society for Microbiology, Inc.(PSM)
    SBJ and PSM signed an MOU on February 1, 2023 to promote the interaction and active scientific collaboration between the two societies and their members.
     
  5. Indonesian Society for Microbiology (ISM) and Indonesian Biotechnology Consortium (IBC)
    SBJ signed MOUs with ISM and IBC in May 2023 to promote the interaction and active scientific collaboration between the two societies and their members.

Network of the Societies for Microbiology and Biotechnology in Southeast Asia

In order to promote collaboration and information exchange among Asian societies in the field of biotechnology, SBJ has formed a network with the following Asian societies:

Young Asian Biotechnologist Prize

In order to stimulate research and to honor outstanding accomplishments in the field of biotechnology by young scientists in Asia other than Japan, SBJ founded the "Young Asian Biotechnologist Prize" in 2004, and one prize laureate has been granted every year.

The DaSilva Award

With the microbial biotechnology field playing an essential part in the development and preservation of the global environment in the 21st century, the Society for Biotechnology, Japan (SBJ) launched The DaSilva Award in 2012 to honor a young Asian researcher who shows promise of outstanding achievements in the field of microbial biotechnology in the near future.

This award was established through a donation of the late Professor Edgar J. DaSilva, Former Director, Division of Life Sciences, UNESCO, Paris.
