Young Asian Biotechnologist Prize 2013 – About the Winner
Yue-Qin Tang
Affiliation: College of Architecture and Environment, Sichuan University, P. R. China
Research title for the award: Microbial communities responsible for methane fermentation
Prof. Yue-Qin Tang received her doctor’s degree from Kumamoto University in 2005. She was an assistant professor in Kumamoto University from July 2006 to March, 2008. After she returned to China, she worked as a professor at Peking University from April, 2008 to September, 2011 and has been serving as a professor at Sichuan University since October, 2011.
Achievements:
Prof. Yue-Qin Tang’s research is focused on environmental biotechnology including environmental microbial ecology, microorganism breeding, bioenergy production and environmental protection. She has published over 90 papers in peer-reviewed journals. She carried out systematic studies on microbial community related to methane fermentation. By using one specified compound, such as main compounds generally contained in wastewaters and important intermediates in methane fermentation, as the sole carbon source in methane fermentation, the effect of carbon source and operation factors such as loading rate and retention time on the structure of microbial community were revealed comprehensively. In addition, microbial communities responsible for anaerobically treating typical wastewaters including kitchen waste, stillage, manure and ligonocellulose were cleared. Her achievement in microbial community in methane fermentation contributes greatly to the stabilization of methane fermentation process.
